I am a head and neck reconstructive surgeon with a background in oral and maxillofacial surgery. My clinical practice includes ablative and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, most often required for patients suffering oral, throat or facial cancer or other trauma of the head, face or neck.
My work is with patients who have suffered injury to the head, face or neck through accident or illness, often cancer.
Disfigurement in that area affects us deeply since our appearance, communications, self-esteem and most of our senses are focused there.
The injuries can be life-changing and possibly life-threatening. As surgeons, we become a major part of the new, difficult world that our patients find themselves in.
Helping towards their recovery is life-affirming and constantly rewarding.
Nicholas leads multidisciplinary teams (MDT) at several London hospitals, including The Harley Street Clinic where he is the chair of the Head & Neck team. Your MDT teams bring together a wide range of expertise from many specialties including maxillofacial, ear nose and throat and plastic surgeons, as well as oral medicine physicians, clinical and medical oncologists and dental specialists. The team meets at least once a week throughout your treatment to monitor your progress. These consultants are in turn supported by nursing staff, social care professionals and patient liaison administrators.
Most patients that we see do not have cancer. However, early examination of any lumps, bumps or lesions is vital, since early diagnosis is the most important factor in ensuring a favourable outcome.
Once a diagnosis is made, specialist MDT team members assume responsibility for different aspects and stages of your treatment plan.
Initially a key worker is assigned to you, normallly a clinical nurse specialist. Their function is to support you through the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up after treatment is completed.
The consultants on your MDT team meet regularly along with your key workers and support staff to monitor your progress throughout all stages of your treatment plan.
